Vacature....
Recent hebben we van Piet Verhagen afscheid genomen.
Na bijna zeven jaar als bestuurslid van Oud in Afrika heeft hij - mede om gezondheidsredenen - besloten te stoppen.
Piet had met dertig jaar werken en wonen in Kenia een schat aan ervaring en kennis waarvan we dankbaar gebruik hebben mogen maken.
Maar zijn vertrek betekent een vacature in het bestuur.
We zoeken een bestuurder die tijd heeft om zich echt actief in te zetten voor Oud in Afrika en die (op eigen kosten) ook bereid en in staat is om contacten te leggen met bestaande en nieuwe partners in Kenia en Ethiopië en die in Nederland zich wil inzetten voor het werven van financiële steun voor onze partners.

2011 ....
2011 staat voor de deur.
In 2010 zijn ruim 660 staaroperaties in Sabatia Eye Hospital (west Kenia) verricht met dank aan de financiële steun van de donateurs van Oud in Afrika.
Tevens gingen de Home Based Care werkzaamheden in Busia (west Kenia) door en konden de zeven vrijwilligers hun activiteiten -voor ruim tachtig ouderen die zelfstandig wonen- voortzetten en diensten verlenen aan de 26 ouderen in het kleine bejaardentehuis.
'Last but not least' konden duizend en twaalf Ethiopische ouderen in 2010 een 'pico-pensioen' ontvangen.
Voor 2011 willen we het Home Based Care Programma in Kenia handhaven, evenals de steun aan de staaroperaties voor ouderen die het echt hard nodig hebben en er absoluut niet voor kunnen betalen. Daarnaast willen we de Pico pensioenen in Ethiopië in 2011 met maximaal 200 ouderen uitbreiden.
Dat betekent dat de partners (afhankelijk van wisselkoersen) minstens honderd en tienduizend Euro nodig hebben in 2011.
Daarvan is nu Eur 64.000,-- beschikbaar.
We hebben dus nog minimaal Eur 46.000,-- nodig (dan kan er geen groei in Pico Pensioenen plaats vinden).

Punten scoren ... voor Oud in Afrika.....
Als frequent reiziger maak je vast en zeker gebruik van een frequent flyer programma.....

CANCER THAT ORIGINATES FROM THE CONJUCTIVA
The patient was seen at
Friends Church Sabatia Eye Hospital ( http://www.sabatiaeyehospital.org )
Due to the ongoing poor accessibility, non affordability level of the patient in Kenya, the patient was not able to seek eye care service. This being a cancerous case it has now blown up so that he can only be cared for.
The patient we came across him during one of our outreach services because he could not come to the hospital. he stays around 200 km from Sabatia.
It only through the strength of financial assistance of Sabatia eye hospital by OUD in Afrika (the Poor Patient Fund) that we managed to go close to this patient.
Many in such bad shapes are there in the community and we are continuing accessing them through such programmes with the help of OUD in Afrika.

This patient was diagnosis: Bilateral cataract, he is not able to see on both eyes for 5/12
Present Medical History: Has no history is medical conditions e.g Diabetes/hypertension
Past medical history: Gives no history of trauma or any other ailment.
Family History: There is no history of blindness or chronic illness in the family.
Past Surgical History: The old man has never been operated on before.
Social History: He is illiterate, married with one wife and five children. 3 boys and 2
girls. He doesn’t smoke nor drinks. All children reached primary school.
Economic history: He earns a living through small scale farming.
The patient after keen screening he was found not able to meet his medical fee, and after being told that he will be supported he became very much excited, he was operated on both eyes and bhe is able to see.
This is just one among many other patients whom we saw this week and he has benefited from OUD Afrika poor fund.

Ouderendag gevierd in Mundika.....
The international day for the elderly is marked every year on 1st of October globally. Its the day set out on the world calender to reflect on the lives, success, challenges and every aspect of the elderly wellbeing.
As usual the 2010 international day for the elderly was held at Mundika Older Persons Home. Elderlys were provided with transport to facilitate their transport to the home for the aged.
The entire community of Grace and Compassion was also present during the celebrations led by sr Beatrice, who is the superior and who also gave a key note address.
The other notable visitors include officials from the ministry of Gender and children affairs, under the department of district social development office and the Association of persons with disability of kenya Busia branch(APDK).
To kick off the celebrations was the holy mass that was led by the catholic church priest. Later it was followed by visitors being taken round to see the environment like to see the elderly and dairy cows among other things.
A number of elderly cited poems, told story telling among others to nice up the day.
Their was also traditional dances and drum beating that attracted many people and made the celebrations lively.
Speaker after speaker praised the gift of old age terming it a golden opportunity thus the saying old is gold.
As part of the government efforts to ensure elderly lived a respectable life one of the officers from the District Social Office said the government was giving a section of the elderly above 70yrs of age money to enable combat poverty and hunger.
Their was various food meals made for the elderly and the visitors who graced the occassion made it a success.
Everyone wished the elderly all the best.

The above named patient is a married lady with 3 children. Two daughters and one son aged 6 yrs, 2 yrs, and 6 month old respectively. The husband is a carpenter aged 27 yrs and she is a house wife.
In 2008, Vivian started loosing her vision gradually without any trauma or pain. She didn’t have the money to seek for eye check, she remained at home despite loosing her eye sight. She then complained to a friend about her eye sight ailment, who then directed her to Sabatia Eye hospital, having seen the sign post while passing from Kapsabet to Kisumu.
Vivian after a few months of collecting funds for transport, she then made her way to the hospital, where she was examined and diagnosed of Bilateral cataract (Cataract Both eyes).
Since Vivian did not have funds to pay for the surgery, she wanted to travel back home blind to look for money. She didn’t know when she would get the money.
Thanks to OUD Afrika, whereby Vivian was done surgery on this fund and can now see and do her daily activities without any problems.
NB:
Vivian was brought in by her six year old daughter as her caretaker and a baby seater for her six month old son. Talking to Vivian, she said “Elokamano Oud Afrika” (Thanks to Oud Afrika) thanks Sabatia Eye Hospital. Even though I’m not old, one day I will grow old with my eye sight.
On behalf of the many poor patients who have benefited from the OuD Afrika poor patients fund Sponsorship we wish to pass our since thanks to the OuD Afrika who have put in effort to ensure that poor patients and families get treatment for their eye ailment.

Thika Tassen Kiangombe report...
Als trouwe lezer van dit weblog (..) weet u hoe het zit;
Nadat Habion samen met Helpage huizen had gebouwd in Thika - Kiangombe bleven we achter met de vraag wat nu?
Toen zijn we met de ouderen verder gaan praten en bleek dat de oudere vrouwen tassen maakten.
Die tassen worden dus gemaakt door een groep mensen die geen weet hebben van ISO, styling, timing en meer van ons soort begrippen.
Lang verhaal kort; we kopen ze in consignatie. Ze worden met vrijwilligers van Macheo uit Thika of met stewardessen van de KLM gratis naar Nederland gebracht en dan verkopen we ze hier. Ze kosten 13 Euro en dat bedrag gaat naar de maakster. Dat wil zeggen; zij krijgt 1300 KShilling. (koersverschil blijft bij Florence van Macheo, zie verslag)
Folrence van Macheo is sociaal werkster en doet dit als vriendendienst voor de oudere dames en Oud in Afrika.

Dus ik legde uit dat ze over van alles konden schrijven wat ze in het dagelijks leven meemaken. Van problemen tot successen en van feesten tot begrafenissen.
Kennedy - één van de twee vrijwilligers met een e-mail adres uit de groep van 7 - stuurde gisteren het volgende verslag. Van belang is om je bij het lezen te realiseren dat Kennedy in een hut woont zoals onder ook op de foto staat. Geen elektriciteit, geen breedband Internet, geen warm en koud stromend water, geen koelkast, geen magnetron.
Geen niks. Alleen muren en een dak, en paar stoelen, een bed, wat pannen, wat kleren en een jerrycan. En in het geval van Kennedy de digitale camera en een tweedehands Nokia 3130 (via Oud in Afrika verkregen).

Picture 1 and 6 shows Pricilar Muleka bitten by a rat. We have treated by antirabies.
Picture 2,3 and 7 shows Philomena Anyango aged 105 years old fallen in a deep hole and got problems on the chest. She is on treatment.
Picture 4,5 and 9 show the roof for Hendrica Nasirumbis house which was blown down. Heavy rains leaving the old person with no house. We have built a new one.
Picture 8 shows a veterinary treating Oud's dairy cow at Kennedys house.
De koe is van de zeven vrijwilligers samen en hebben ze gekregen via Heifer nadat ze de nodige cursussen hadden gevolgd (zie eerdere informatie op dit weblog).
