Goed nieuws is er ook....

Het 'Farm Upgrading Project', dat in 2007 voor een belangrijk deel plaats heeft gevonden met hulp van Heifer in Kenya en geld van Oud in Afrika donateurs en het NCDO bij de zusters in Mundika, is formeel afgerond met het doorgeven van vijf vaarzen aan vijf Kolping families in west Kenya.
De vijf vaarzen zijn de eerste nakomelingen van de vaarzen die de zusters in Mundika konden kopen met het geld dat ze van u via Oud in Afrika kregen omn samen met Heifer de boerderij te gaan verbeteren.
De zusters hebben in 2007 en 2008 hard gewerkt, tegenslagen moeten verduren, maar het gaat nu goed met de boerderij. Er komen regelmatig boeren uit de omgeving kijken samen met ambtenaren van de lokale landbouwvoorlichting.

Een greep uit het resultaten overzicht van de Farm van het afgelopen half jaar zoals beschreven door Sr. Beatrice:

- All the six gilts furrowed a total of 41 piglets. (een 'gilt' is een jong varken)
- We earned Ksh 4.600,- from the sale of 10 local chickens.
- Sold 50 suckers of bananas at Ksh 200,- each. This was 85% profit on the investment costs.
- We planted 5 1/2 acres of maize.
- We have started rabbit rearing.

In het kleine bejaardenhuisje dat de zusters hebben woont Mr. Norbatus Owegi.
Hij heeft op 29 mei jl. de menigte die bijeen was toegesproken om de 'pass on the gift' ceremonie van de zusters en Heifer Kenya bij te wonen. Hij zei onder andere:

"I have seen great things and I have come across numberless groups of farmers coming to learn from our farm."

Mama Lucy Atieno, een dagloner die regelmatig werkt bij de zusters sprak ook:

"Through Heifer Kenya, after bringing cows to the sisters, I work at the Convent as a casual worker. Nowadays my children are sure of food every day, they go to school, they get medication when sick, clothing is not a problem to me. Whenever there is a farmers' training in the convent, I also attend..... My working with the sisters has been an eye opener. I have few chickens, I am able to grow vegetables in my small garden at home for my own use and sell the surplus."

Fredrick Juma, a neighbour to the Convent, said: "For sure, I wish all the neigbours were like the sisters. I am not their employee nor am I one of the old destitute people they support, but I have benefited greatly. They have uplifted my living standard by inviting me whenever there is a seminar about farming. I was surprised when they invited me to an educational tour to Kisii. I am determined to work hard with the available resorces and make a difference in life."

Susana Nabwire, Kolping member who received one of the five heifers, said: "I am determined to work hard and keep my animal in a good healthy environment. I have received that animal freely, and I will also freely pass on to a needy person. Thank you !"

Laptops...

Van zuster Lydia en de vrijwilligers in Mundika hadden we al eerder een verzoek om computers gehad. Zuster Lydia is bekend met het werken op een computer sinds haar opleiding in Engeland en we een aantal jaren geleden een nieuwe desktop hebben gekocht voor het convent (niet op kosten van Oud in Afrika maar een bestemmingsgift rechtstreeks).
De vrijwilligers hadden geen computerervaring dus die zijn eerst op cursus gegaan. Maar we hadden de vraag naar goede tweedehands laptops alvast uitgezet via JD. Na korte tijd kregen we een viertal prima laptops.

Van de firma Nobel Automatisering.

Twee van de laptops zijn een dag of tien geleden naar Nairobi gebracht door Yvonne van Wings of Support. In Nairobi zijn ze opgehaald door zuster Euphrasia en binnenkort is er dus één bij zuster Lydia en één bij de volunteers.
Zuster Lydia gaat er de patiëntenadministratie op voeren en de vrijwilligers moeten eerst oefenen. Veel oefenen.....

De andere twee laptops gaan binnenkort naar het westen van Ethiopië. De vraag is daar inmiddels groot dus we gaan eens kijken of we daar aan kunnen gaan voldoen.

Misschien kunnen we eens kijken of we een vestiging van www.nice-international.com in DembiDollo kunnen beginnen..... Het laatst bericht van onze partners aldaar is dat ze een maand of wat zonder Internet hebben gezeten.
Om over de electriciteitsvoorziening nog maar te zwijgen.

The great land grab.....

"EARLY this year, the king of Saudi Arabia held a ceremony to receive a batch of rice, part of the first crop to be produced under something called the King Abdullah initiative for Saudi agricultural investment abroad. It had been grown in Ethiopia, where a group of Saudi investors is spending $100m to raise wheat, barley and rice on land leased to them by the government. The investors are exempt from tax in the first few years and may export the entire crop back home. Meanwhile, the World Food Programme (WFP) is spending almost the same amount as the investors ($116m) providing 230,000 tonnes of food aid between 2007 and 2011 to the 4.6m Ethiopians it thinks are threatened by hunger and malnutrition."

Jaarboek IS 2009

Of we meedoen aan het Jaarboek IS 2009 van Partos en Global Village Media vragen ze in hun brief van 9 april jl.

Met een jaarbegroting van afgerond 1 ton is een bijdrage van Euro 1.600,-- voor één pagina wat veel. Jammer dat daar niet over lijkt nagedacht. Wellicht was er een vermogensfonds of andere organisatie geweest die daarvoor een bijdrage had willen verlenen (zodat de 'kleintjes' zich ook kunnen presenteren).

Maar erger: waarom in vredesnaam een boek ?
"Ik heb al een boek..." zou iemand die ik goed ken zeggen......

Zo'n overzicht moet in een Wikipedia-achtige structuur natuurlijk gewoon op Internet. En snel...

Pico pensioen ....

Zoals bekend is het 'pico pensioen' voor ouderen in Ethiopië 25 Birr per maand. Dat is momenteel € 2,12. Dat is weinig. Ter vergelijking; in het laatste nummer van het magazine Sprout staat een groot artikel over de bloemenbusiness in Ethiopië. In vijf jaar tijd steeg de exportwaarde van 5,5 naar 150 miljoen dollar. Aan het woord komen een aantal Nederlanders waaronder Frank Ammerlaan van AQ Roses. Hij betaalt zijn dagarbeiders 400 Birr per maand. Daarvoor werken zze acht uur per dag. Ses dagen in de week. Daarmee zit hij twintig procent hoger dan het landelijk gemiddelde voor dit soort arbeid en er staan dagelijks honderdenmensen voor de deur in de hoop op werk.....

Living with our Bibi....

Living with our Bibi: a qualitative study of children living with grandmothers in the Nshamba area of north western Tanzania.

The Kwa Wazee Project works with grandparents and the grandchildren who live with them (generally orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS) in the Kagera district of Tanzania. The main activity of the Project is to provide a cash transfer in the form of a pension to grandparents (mostly grandmothers). Grannies get small monthly pensions for themselves and for the grandchildren they support. This report is the result of a series of participatory workshops with children who are part of the project. It provides an understanding of the issues children are facing and directions for policy and programme intervention. It is clear that children living in elderly-headed households have more stressors in their lives than children living with parents. The findings in this study suggest that the following characterise the issues affecting elderly-headed households:

poverty:
findings suggest that children living in elderly-headed households often do not get enough food and seldom have access to protein
children from elderly-headed households are overworked
even though grandmothers and grandchildren see education as very important, children living with grandmothers do not access education easily because of lack of money. In addition, if they do get to school, their progress is hampered, again largely because of poverty.

grandchildren as caretakers:
another characteristic of the elderly-headed household is that children function as caretakers.
When children have responsibility for the welfare of others they may become "parentified" - that is, they assume responsibilities performed more appropriately by an adult, including providing health and personal care, emotional support, caring for siblings and maintaining the household

an uncertain future:
a further stress that is added to the lives of children living in elderly-headed households is the uncertainty they feel about their immediate futures. They worry about what will happen to them when their grandmothers die. The worry that a child in this situation faces is that he or she will have to move again and will likely have to live with aunts and uncles in a situation they know from experience is worse than their life with their grandmother
also, the children fear (quite realistically) that they will not inherit property when their grandmothers die, leaving them with no means to make a living

a generation gap:
the gap between the grandparent's generation and the children emerges in the conflict between grandmothers and children over time to play and to socialise and rest
Grandmothers expect that they will be looked after but the children know that their ability to do this will be severely hampered because of the missing generation. Parents would have provided the means for further training and income generation and would have taken responsibility for the grandparentsYet, the study shows that children living with their grandmothers feel, on the whole, loved and cared for in spite of the poverty and stress. Perhaps it is this sense of being loved that results in the resilience that is obvious in what the children say about their lives and themselves. They have a strong sense of responsibility towards their grandparents, they feel proud that they can work hard and care for their grannies. They feel they have learned skills that other children don't have and they are clearly goodsurvivors and adaptors.
